About the role:

Step into a pivotal role with Walgett Shire Council as a Management Accountant, where your financial expertise will directly influence decision-making and help shape the future of local services. Based in the heart of remote NSW, this is more than just a numbers job, you’ll be a key business partner, working alongside managers and executive staff to guide budgeting, forecasting, financial modelling, and reporting. From managing council investments to driving continuous improvement in financial systems, your contributions will be both strategic and hands-on.

This full-time, permanent role offers the rare opportunity to make a tangible impact while enjoying the lifestyle of a regional community. You'll play a central part in building financial literacy across departments, supporting transparency, and ensuring that council operations remain financially sound. With flexible working options, five weeks’ leave, and the chance to develop your career in public sector finance, this is an ideal role for a qualified accountant ready to take ownership, lead change, and be part of something meaningful.

About you:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline

  • Proven experience in management accounting, including budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis

  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret financial data and provide clear, actionable insights

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and able to engage effectively with staff at all levels

  • High level of proficiency in Microsoft Excel and financial systems (experience with Civica/Authority is a plus)

  • Detail-oriented and organised, with the ability to meet tight deadlines in a dynamic environment

  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous improvement and strong internal customer service

  • CPA or CA qualified (or working towards) is desirable

  • Experience in local government or public sector financial management is advantageous

  • Confident in coaching and training non-financial staff in budgeting and reporting

  • A team player with a proactive approach and a passion for contributing to community outcomes

  • Holds a current Class C driver’s licence
