About us:

Walgett Shire Council proudly serves a diverse and unique region in the heart of outback New South Wales. Covering over 22,000 square kilometres, the Shire includes the towns of Walgett, Lightning Ridge, and Collarenebri, along with the villages of Carinda, Cumborah, Rowena, and Burren Junction, as well as expansive rural areas. With a population of approximately 7,000, the Shire supports key industries such as agriculture, grazing, grain handling, opal mining, and tourism.

Nestled at the junction of the Namoi and Barwon Rivers, Walgett is rich in history and natural beauty. Once a bustling paddle-steamer port, it is now the northern gateway to the iconic Darling River Run. Just an hour north, Lightning Ridge is famed for its vibrant opal mining culture and distinctive outback charm. Whether you’re fossicking for opals, soaking in artesian springs, or enjoying river fishing, the region offers a truly unique lifestyle.

About the role:

We are seeking a practical, people-focused leader to take on the role of Roads Coordinator—someone with a strong background in road construction and maintenance able to manage a team and achieve operational targets to keep our road network running.

This is a great opportunity for a current supervisor, leading hand, or foreperson interested in a more strategic, yet hands-on leadership position. You’ll be responsible for coordinating day-to-day road maintenance and construction activities across the Shire’s extensive sealed and unsealed road network.

This is not a behind-the-desk role—you’ll be out in the field, leading by example, supporting your supervisors, and working with crews to overcome daily challenges and meet Council’s service expectations. Working closely with the Manager Roads, you’ll be the go-to person for scheduling, job planning, resource allocation, and crew coordination—ensuring works are delivered safely, efficiently, and to a high standard. Your ability to mentor and guide will be key to lifting capability across the team.

About you:

You might already be leading a crew, or supervising small-scale projects—and you’re now looking for more scope, more responsibility, and a chance to make a bigger impact.

You’ll be someone who:

  • Leads from the front and earns respect through fairness, consistency, and hard work.
  • Knows rural roads and understands their importance to community life and economic resilience.
  • Has experience managing people and resources in a road construction/maintenance setting.
  • Can communicate clearly with crew members, supervisors, and senior staff.
  • Prioritises safety and leads by example in everything you do.
  • Wants to mentor other supervisors—offering support and advice, while encouraging ownership and accountability.
  • Holds a Certificate IV in Civil Construction Supervision (or equivalent experience), along with a White Card, Traffic Control qualifications, and a Class C Driver’s Licence.

You don’t need to be an engineer. You just need to be a strong operator and a capable leader who is ready to step up, back yourself, and grow with us.

At Walgett Shire Council, we understand that not every candidate will meet every criterion, and that is perfectly fine—your passion and potential matter most to us.
