We are looking for passionate and committed professionals who are aligned with our core values: Respect, Integrity, Ethical Conduct, Courage, Honesty, Accountability, and Responsibility.

About the role:

Are you interested in procurement, stores or logistics and looking to gain real, hands-on experience? Walgett Shire Council is offering a unique 12-week paid work experience opportunity where you will be part of a team that keeps essential services moving in a rural and remote community.

This placement begins 1 November 2025 and runs for 12 weeks. Council will close for the Christmas period (18 December 2025 to 5 January 2026), giving you the chance to spend Christmas at home before returning to complete your placement in the new year. A reduced placement period can be considered if you need to return to study earlier.

What will you do:

During your time with us you will gain practical experience across procurement, stores and logistics, including:

  • Working in our procurement team to identify cost savings and efficiencies
  • Reviewing supplier contracts and undertaking compliance checks
  • Assisting with improving internal governance and reporting processes
  • Gaining experience in stock control, ordering, receipting and stores management
  • Supporting day-to-day logistics that keep a remote local government functioning

You will not just be observing – you will be contributing to real projects, working alongside experienced staff, and developing skills that are highly transferable to future careers in government, business or industry.

About you

You are an enthusiastic, motivated individual with an interest in procurement, stores, or logistics. You may be a current university or TAFE student, a recent graduate, or someone seeking to gain practical experience to strengthen your career pathway. You are curious about how organisations function behind the scenes and want to learn how procurement and logistics drive essential services. You enjoy problem-solving, have an eye for detail, and are keen to develop your skills by working on real projects rather than just observing.

To be eligible you must hold a current Driver Licence and be able to arrange your own transport to and from Walgett. A willingness to live and work in a remote community is important – this opportunity is not just about work experience, it is also about immersing yourself in a unique regional lifestyle.

For further information or discussion about the position, contact our People and Culture team on 02 6828 6100 during business hours.

What we offer:

  • 35-hour work week, Monday to Friday

  • Council closure period over Christmas (18 December – 5 January) allowing you to spend Christmas at home
  • Access to Council’s share housing at $100 per week, inclusive of all utilities
  • Hands-on experience in procurement, stores and logistics – reviewing contracts, compliance checking, improving governance processes, stock management, and day-to-day logistics
