About the role:
The position of Ranger plays a key role in delivering regulatory and animal control services across Walgett Shire, ensuring compliance with environmental, health, and animal welfare legislation. This includes managing the Council pound, coordinating rehoming and de-sexing programs, feral animal control, investigating complaints such as illegal dumping or noise, and engaging with the community through education and collaboration with external agencies. The role also involves after-hours response and holds a firearms licence for regulatory functions.
The position is a permanent, full-time role and may be based in either Walgett or Lightning Ridge. The position will work closely with our Walgett-based Ranger to provide coverage across the Shire area. This is a critical role for a Council that is committed to doing things differently, valuing transparency, teamwork, and delivering positive outcomes for the community.
About you:
- Experienced in handling and managing animals safely and professionally.
- Understand and can apply key legislation such as the Companion Animals Act and Local Government Act.
- Have strong investigative skills and can manage issues like illegal dumping, noise, and nuisance complaints.
- Effective communicator who works well with the public, stakeholders, and enforcement agencies.
- Organised, reliable, and able to manage competing priorities independently or as part of a team.
- Computer literate and comfortable with reporting, documentation, and using Council systems.
- Committed to building a positive workplace culture.
- Experience working in a rural or regional context will be viewed favourably.
