At Walgett Shire Council we have a people-first culture. Safety, our people, and service to the community are at the core of everything we do. We are looking for passionate and committed professionals who are aligned with our core values: Respect, Integrity, Ethical Conduct, Courage, Honesty, Accountability, and Responsibility.

About the role:

This role suits a practical, community minded person who likes things clean, organised and welcoming. Kookaburra Court is Council’s boarding house style accommodation for older people and visiting essential workers. As the Accommodation Caretaker you will help residents and guests feel safe, comfortable and at home, while enjoying the security of on site accommodation yourself.

You will be an accommodation all rounder. Your day to day work will include reception duties such as greeting arrivals, completing simple check in and check out processes, answering questions and providing clear information about the house, local services and basic transport options. You will clean rooms and shared spaces, prepare rooms for new residents, and carry out simple garden and room maintenance tasks so the property remains tidy, safe and well presented.

You will also assist with straightforward food preparation, such as light breakfasts or simple shared meals, and help to keep the kitchen, dining and common areas clean and orderly. Good customer service is essential, together with a calm and respectful manner, as you will support older residents, people living with disability and workers coming to Walgett for essential services. From time to time you will respond to matters outside standard hours in line with an agreed on call roster, with support available when issues need to be escalated.

The successful applicant will have:

  • Experience in accommodation, hospitality, cleaning or a similar hands-on role.
  • A friendly, calm and respectful approach, with a strong focus on customer service for older people, people living with disability and visiting workers.
  • Practical skills in cleaning, basic food preparation and simple garden or room maintenance, and a willingness to roll up their sleeves and help where needed.
  • Reliability and the ability to follow routines, work independently, keep on top of daily checklists and respond to issues as they arise, including participation in an on call roster.
  • Good communication skills and confidence to manage simple reception duties such as check in, check out and answering enquiries.
  • Basic computer and record-keeping skills, or a willingness to learn.
  • Sufficient physical fitness to carry out regular cleaning and manual tasks safely.
  • The right to work in Australia and the ability to meet Council’s pre employment checks.

At Walgett Shire Council, we understand that not every candidate will meet every criterion, and that is perfectly fine—your passion and potential matter most to us.
