About the role:

Council delivers essential services to a large, diverse area and supports the lifestyles of the unique characters who call this region home. Doing so requires us finding and keeping the right people. Therefore the Recruitment Officer is a critical position that touches every part of Council and contributes to our ongoing success in improving opportunities and liveability for our communities.

This position collaborates closely with Directors, Managers, and Supervisors to provide comprehensive HR services that align with the Council's goals. As a hands-on professional, you will manage recruitment campaigns, advise on employee relations and employee entitlement matters, and support initiatives aimed at enhancing workforce engagement and wellness. This is a fulltime, permanent position that may be based in either Walgett or Lightning Ridge.

Key Responsibilities:

  • End-to-End Recruitment: Oversee the entire recruitment process, from drafting job advertisements to onboarding successful candidates.
  • Compliance Assurance: Ensure adherence to employment legislation, the Local Government (State) Award, and internal HR policies.
  • Engagement Initiatives: Drive programs that enhance employee engagement and workplace culture, including wellness and recognition activities.
  • Workforce Planning: Contribute to strategic workforce planning to address skill gaps and future capability needs.
  • HR Systems Improvement: Review and enhance HR systems, policies, and processes to improve service delivery and compliance.
  • Data Management: Maintain accurate employee records while adhering to privacy and governance standards.
  • Team Collaboration: Work closely with team members to ensure continuity of service across the People & Culture function.

About you:

  • Proven experience in generalist HR support, including recruitment, employee relations, and workforce planning.
  • Strong understanding of Australian employment legislation with the ability to interpret and apply relevant laws.
  • Experience in developing and implementing workforce capability strategies.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to prepare clear reports and documentation.
  • High-level interpersonal skills, with the ability to coach and influence at all levels.
  • Strong organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion in a small community setting.

Walgett Shire is situated in the far north west of New South Wales. The Shire consists of several larger towns and villages and a large rural population. The Shire is on the productive soil plains of N.S.W and traditional rural pursuits have been farming and grazing. Walgett Shire covers 22,000 square kilometres and has a population of 7199 people and includes the towns of Walgett, Lightning Ridge, Burren Junction, Collarenebri, Carinda, Cumborah, Grawin Glengarry & Sheepyard Opal Fields, Rowena and Pokataroo.
