Senior Administration Officer - Office of the General Manager
Job No:
WGC249
Location:
Walgett, NSW
- A trusted administration role at the centre of Council’s governance, risk and compliance work.
- Hybrid work available, or relocate to Walgett with Council share housing available.
- Earn up to $87,000 AUD plus 12% superannuation.
About the role:
Walgett Shire Council is seeking a highly organised and capable Senior Administration Officer to join the Office of the General Manager.
This is a role for someone who enjoys being close to the centre of an organisation. Perhaps you have worked in senior administration, executive support, legal administration, governance, risk, compliance, records, audit support or a busy corporate office where accuracy, judgment and follow through matter.
This is not a basic administration role. The position supports the governance, risk and compliance functions that help Council operate properly, meet its obligations and make decisions in a structured, transparent and accountable way.
You will provide high level administrative and coordination support across Council and committee meeting cycles, agenda preparation, business papers, minute taking, resolution tracking, policy and directive control, governance registers, risk documentation, compliance calendars, audit actions, records, correspondence and reporting.
The role works closely with the General Manager, the Principal Legal Advisor, the Executive Assistant to the Mayor and General Manager, the Executive Leadership Team, managers, staff and external agencies. It will suit someone who is calm under pressure, good with detail, confident following matters through and able to handle sensitive information with discretion.
Council is open to either of the following arrangements for the right candidate:
- A hybrid arrangement, with regular on-site presence in Walgett; or
- Relocation to Walgett, with Council share housing available.
For a hybrid arrangement, Council’s preference is that the successful applicant be on site in Walgett on one of the following arrangements:
- 1 day per week;
- 2 days per fortnight; or
- 1 full week per month.
The exact arrangement can be discussed with the preferred candidate and may reduce over time, depending on operational needs, performance, systems, relationships and the ability to deliver the role effectively.
Some on-site presence is important, particularly while the successful applicant builds relationships, understands Council’s systems and becomes familiar with our governance and operational environment. This is a role that can be flexible, but it cannot be disconnected from the organisation.
For a candidate open to relocation, this is a genuine opportunity to build Australian local government experience, earn good money, reduce living costs and experience rural New South Wales in a role where your work will be noticed and valued.
About you:
The successful applicant will have demonstrated experience in high level administration, governance support, compliance support or a similar corporate administration role.
You may have a background in administration, executive support, legal administration, risk, compliance, audit support, records management or policy coordination. Local government experience would be highly regarded, but it is not essential.
You will be someone who can bring order to competing priorities. You will be comfortable tracking deadlines, following up actions, maintaining registers, preparing documents, managing records and supporting formal meeting processes.
You will also have:
- strong attention to detail and pride in producing accurate work;
- the ability to prepare, format and quality check professional correspondence, reports, agendas, minutes and briefing material;
- confidence working with confidential and sensitive information;
- good judgment, discretion and professionalism;
- strong organisational skills and the ability to keep matters moving without needing constant direction;
- sound communication skills and the ability to work respectfully with staff, managers, Councillors, agencies and community members;
- confidence using Microsoft 365 and the ability to learn new systems quickly;
- an interest in good governance, risk management, compliance and public service.
At Walgett Shire Council, we understand that not every candidate will meet every criterion. If you have strong administration experience, good judgment, a willingness to learn and the ability to work in a role where accuracy and confidentiality matter, we encourage you to apply.
