About the role:
Walgett Shire Council is looking for a safe, reliable and community-minded drivers to operate Council’s minibus for youth, recreation, aquatic and community programs.
The primary responsibility of the role is to safely transport children, young people, employees and equipment to scheduled activities across the Walgett Shire and other approved locations.
During school terms, the service operates on Wednesday and Friday afternoons. Each school term shift runs from 3.15 pm to 7.15 pm and provides four paid hours.
During Council’s Summer Youth Program, from 21 December 2026 to 3 February 2027, the service operates from Wednesday to Sunday. Summer shifts have a duty span from 10.45 am to 5.15 pm, including a 30 minute unpaid meal break while the driver is in Collarenebri. Each summer shift provides six paid hours.
We understand not every applicant will be available for every shift. This role is offered on a casual basis to work around your availability.
Additional shifts may be available on other days depending on Council’s operational requirements and the successful applicant’s availability.
This is more than just a driving role. When not operating the minibus, you will assist with youth programs and Council facilities. Depending on your experience, qualifications and operational requirements, this may include:
- Assisting with youth, recreation, aquatic and community activities
- Setting up and packing down activities and events
- Providing kiosk and customer service support
- Processing payments, handling cash and serving food and beverages
- Cleaning vehicles, facilities and program areas
- Undertaking lifeguarding and aquatic safety duties where appropriately qualified and rostered
Lifeguarding duties will only be undertaken by employees who hold all required current qualifications.
What you will do:
- Safely operate Council’s minibus in accordance with approved routes, timetables and program requirements.
- Complete vehicle inspections and report defects, damage or maintenance requirements.
- Assist passengers to board and leave the vehicle safely.
- Ensure seatbelts are worn where fitted and vehicle capacity is not exceeded.
- Promote safe and respectful behaviour while travelling.
- Maintain passenger manifests, trip records and vehicle documentation.
- Monitor weather and road conditions and respond appropriately to changing conditions.
- Keep the minibus clean, fuelled, secure and ready for use.
- Assist with the safe loading and unloading of program equipment.
- Respond appropriately to breakdowns, accidents, illness and other incidents.
- Assist with youth, recreation, aquatic and community programs when not driving.
About you:
You will be a safe, responsible driver who is reliable, practical, and comfortable working with children and young people.
You must have:
- A current Light Rigid licence, or a higher class of licence.
- A safe driving history.
- A current Working with Children Check clearance for paid employment.
- A current First Aid certificate, or the willingness and capacity to obtain one before commencing.
- Good communication and customer service skills.
- The ability to engage respectfully with children, young people, families and community members.
- The ability to work independently, follow schedules and respond calmly to changing circumstances.
Previous bus driving experience is desirable, but not essential.
Experience working with children or young people in youth, sport, recreation, education or community programs will be highly regarded. Knowledge of communities and road conditions across the Walgett Shire would also be an advantage.
Experience in an aquatic facility, kiosk, hospitality or customer service environment is desirable. Applicants holding current Pool Lifeguard and Advanced Resuscitation qualifications may also be rostered to undertake aquatic safety duties.
