Roads Engineer

Job No: WGC276
Location: Walgett, NSW

  • Take road projects from investigation and planning through to construction and completion.
  • Help improve the roads that connect Walgett Shire’s communities, farms and essential services.
  • Earn $78,000 to $95,411 per year, depending on skills and experience, plus superannuation.
  • Access shared housing for $150 per week, with relocation assistance potentially available.

About the role:

Roads are essential to life and work across Walgett Shire. They connect our towns and villages, support local industries and help people reach the services they rely on. As Roads Engineer, you will help plan and deliver improvements across the Shire’s local and regional road network.

This is an opportunity to see your engineering work make a practical difference. You will be involved throughout the life of road and civil infrastructure projects, from investigating problems and assessing options to developing designs, coordinating delivery and handing over completed works.

Your work will include road maintenance, capital projects and flood damage restoration. You will work closely with Council crews, contractors, consultants and Transport for NSW, and provide engineering advice on roads, pavements, drainage, construction methods, safety and value for money.

The role combines time in the field with project planning and technical work. You will help assess road conditions, set priorities, prepare project scopes and estimates, monitor construction and keep projects on track. You will also contribute to funding applications, claims and reporting for funded works.

You will work closely with the RMCC, Local and Regional Roads, and Capital Works Coordinators to support coordinated delivery across Council’s road programs.

About you:

You are a civil engineering professional who enjoys turning technical plans into practical results. You can assess a problem, develop a sound solution and work with others to deliver it safely and to a good standard.

You will bring:

  • A tertiary qualification in Civil Engineering or a closely related discipline relevant to road and civil infrastructure engineering.
  • Experience investigating, designing, coordinating or delivering road, pavement, drainage or civil infrastructure works.
  • The ability to interpret engineering drawings, technical specifications, construction contracts, estimates and project documentation.
  • Working knowledge of road construction and maintenance, quality assurance, work health and safety, traffic management and environmental controls.
  • Strong project coordination, contract administration, record keeping and financial monitoring skills.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical matters to different audiences.
  • The ability to organise competing priorities, work independently in the field and raise risks promptly.
  • A current Class C driver licence and Construction Induction Card.

Experience with Transport for NSW standards and specifications, the RMCC or other road maintenance contracts, regional road networks, local government or flood restoration programs will be well regarded. Membership of, or eligibility for membership of, Engineers Australia, IPWEA or another relevant professional body is also desirable.

  • 5 weeks annual leave each year.
  • An additional week of My Leave, Council's wellness and wellbeing leave.
  • Relocation assistance for a strong candidate.
  • Shared housing may be available for $150 per week, subject to availability.
  • Training and professional development opportunities.
  • Most importantly, we want to create a workplace where good people enjoy working together. We value experience, different perspectives, practical ideas and people who are prepared to share what they know.
  • You will have room to exercise professional judgement, an opportunity to influence how we deliver our service and colleagues who are expected to support one another.

The overall value of the package extends well beyond the advertised salary. Housing assistance, relocation support, and additional leave provide a significant financial and lifestyle benefit.
