Senior ICT Officer

Job No: WGC278
Location: Walgett, NSW

  • Lead the day-to-day ICT support and services that Council staff rely on across the Shire.
  • Work closely with Council’s Managed Service Provider to keep systems reliable, secure and responsive.
  • Salary from $78,000 to $95,411 per year, depending on skills and experience, plus superannuation.
  • Five weeks annual leave, an additional week of My Leave, and shared housing may be available.

About the role:

Walgett Shire Council is seeking an experienced Senior ICT Officer to manage the day-to-day operation of Council’s technology environment.

You will be Council’s principal internal ICT contact, providing practical support to staff and Councillors and working closely with our Managed Service Provider to ensure issues are tracked, escalated and resolved. The role supports Council’s offices and services across a large Shire, so you will need to be organised, responsive and comfortable working with people who have different levels of technical experience.

Your work will cover a broad range of ICT services, including Microsoft 365, user access, computers and mobile devices, telecommunications, software licences and Council’s ICT asset register. You will also provide audio-visual support for Council and committee meetings, training and community events, including hybrid meetings.

You will monitor the performance of the Managed Service Provider, support cybersecurity and information management practices, and advise the Principal Legal Advisor and General Manager on ICT risks, service performance and improvement opportunities. You will also help Council make better use of digital tools and technology.

This is a hands-on role with scope to contribute to the way Council’s ICT services develop. You will work across the organisation and have the opportunity to make a practical difference to the systems and support staff rely on every day.

About you:

You are an experienced ICT professional who enjoys solving problems and helping people use technology well. You can work independently, manage competing priorities and explain technical issues in clear, practical terms.

You will bring:

  • Experience providing ICT support and administration across Windows and Microsoft 365 environments.
  • Experience administering Microsoft 365 services, including Entra ID, Intune, Teams and SharePoint.
  • The ability to diagnose and resolve hardware, software, network and connectivity issues, and to escalate complex matters appropriately.
  • Experience working with external ICT providers, including managing service requests, incidents and agreed service levels.
  • Experience managing ICT assets, software licences and telecommunications services.
  • A sound understanding of cybersecurity, data protection and information management.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills, including the ability to prepare clear user instructions.
  • Experience providing audio-visual support for meetings or public events. Experience with hybrid or livestreamed meetings will be well regarded.
  • The ability to work with limited supervision and contribute to service improvement and digital initiatives.
  • A Certificate IV or higher qualification in Information Technology or a related discipline, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • A current Australian Class C driver licence.

Experience in local government or the public sector, and familiarity with systems such as Civica Authority and Content Manager, will be well regarded. Experience with ICT procurement, contract management, digital transformation or the Essential Eight Maturity Model is also desirable.

About Walgett Shire Council

Walgett Shire Council proudly serves a diverse and unique region in the heart of outback New South Wales. Covering over 22,000 square kilometres, the Shire includes the towns of Walgett, Lightning Ridge, and Collarenebri, along with the villages of Carinda, Cumborah, Rowena, and Burren Junction, as well as expansive rural areas. With a population of over 7,000, the Shire supports key industries such as agriculture, grazing, grain handling, opal mining, and tourism.

Nestled at the junction of the Namoi and Barwon Rivers, Walgett is rich in history and natural beauty. Once a bustling paddle-steamer port, it is now the northern gateway to the iconic Darling River Run, offering breathtaking landscapes and a deep connection to Australia’s heritage.

Just an hour north, Lightning Ridge is famed for its vibrant opal mining culture and distinctive outback charm. Whether it is fossicking for opals, exploring underground art galleries, soaking in naturally heated artesian springs, or enjoying the tranquillity of river fishing, the region offers a truly one-of-a-kind experience.

At Walgett Shire Council, we are rebuilding with a people-first culture. Safety, our people, and service to the community are at the core of everything we do. We are looking for passionate and committed professionals who are aligned with our core values: Respect, Integrity, Ethical Conduct, Courage, Honesty, Accountability, and Responsibility.
