- Work approximately 38 to 40 hours per week from late December to early February.

- Bring your sporting ability, coaching experience and energy to a funded community program.
About the role:
Walgett Shire Council is seeking a Sports Program Activity Leader for its 2026 to 2027 summer youth program.
This is a practical, active role for someone who enjoys sport and is ready to get involved. You will lead football and basketball activities, teen pool takeovers and other Council activities, events and excursions for young people aged 12 to 17. The program will run across the school holiday period, from late December until early February.
The program is funded and forms part of Council’s crime prevention and community safety work. It gives young people positive ways to stay active, connect with others and take part in their community over summer.
You will work mainly in Walgett, with some activities and travel across the Shire, including Lightning Ridge and Collarenebri. The roster will include days, evenings, late nights and weekends.
What you will do:
- Plan and lead football, basketball and other sport and recreation activities.
- Coordinate youth activities during teen pool takeovers, working alongside pool operators and qualified lifeguards.
- Help deliver Council events, youth centre activities and excursions.
- Encourage young people to take part, build their confidence and contribute ideas.
- Set clear expectations and maintain a safe, respectful and welcoming environment.
- Work with Council staff, families, schools, sporting clubs and community partners.
- Keep attendance and activity records and share feedback to improve the program.
About you:
You are sporty, practical and comfortable leading activities with teenagers. You may have experience as a coach, personal trainer, PE teacher, sports instructor or club volunteer. Relevant experience can come from paid work, volunteering or sport. Formal youth work or childcare qualifications are not required.
You will bring:
- Strong ability or experience in sport, coaching, physical activity or recreation.
- The confidence to lead a group, explain activities and adapt them for different abilities.
- Patience, sound judgement and the ability to remain calm when behaviour is challenging.
- A respectful approach to young people from different backgrounds and circumstances.
- An understanding of professional boundaries and when to raise a concern with a supervisor.
- Availability for a varied roster, including evenings, late nights and weekends.
- A current Working with Children Check, or the ability to obtain one before starting.
Young people in the program may be dealing with complex circumstances. The role will suit someone who can build rapport, stay fair and consistent, and keep activities positive when things do not go to plan.
What we offer:
- A paid, seasonal role with approximately 38 to 40 hours of work per week.
- A casual rate from $38.38 per hour, with applicable penalty rates.
- Shared accommodation may be available in Walgett for $150 per week.
- The opportunity to lead sport and recreation activities as part of a funded community program.
- The chance to contribute to positive summer opportunities for young people across the Shire.
